MARK RAVENHILL AWARD
The
award is given to the best production of a new play in Czech theatres. New
plays are defined as works written within the past ten years prior to the award
ceremony. The awarded production is selected by the Centre for Contemporary
Drama Festival Board. The main criterion for awarding a production is „the
symbiosis of the qualities of the text and the qualities of its staging“.
Mark Ravenhill Award 2011
Selection
was made out of 130 productions of new plays in Czech theatres. The award was
given out in the presence of Mark Ravehhill on 15th March, 2012.
The
awarded production:
Ewald Palmetshofer: hamlet
is dead. no gravity
Činoherní
Studio Ústí nad Labem – www.cinoherak.cz,
stage direction: David Šiktanc
“The
Činoherní Studio managed to open up the originally winded play in an
unexpectedly persuasive manner, and transform it into a lively, entertaining
and in key moments also disturbing production. The stage director David Šiktanc
leads six actors to create and rigorously preserve figures that were
typologically clearly defined, albeit caricatured, but nevertheless absolutely
consistent. The art of sharing an ecstatic emotion, and not falling into
psychological pettiness, similarly as the ability to be witty without
unnecessary joke cracking or trivial situation comedy is also significantly
important.” (Festival Board Evaluation)
